Chapter 2

Set Your Vision and Mission

Your vision is your big dream, the mark you want to leave on the world. Think 5–10 years out. It’s your North Star for choosing projects or saying no to distractions. Spend some time thinking about this in vivid detail, what you’re doing, who you’re working with, and how it feels.

Your mission is shorter-term, 2–3 years and defines how you bring your vision to life. It’s specific and measurable, like “Drop a debut album with 1M streams” or “Tour 10 cities with sold-out shows.” It ties your daily grind to the big picture.

Your strategy is the plan, yearly or quarterly steps to hit your mission. Think: “Release three singles this year, collaborate with X influencer, pitch to Y playlist.”

Within Musician OS, these three elements get operationalised as Goals (Vision), Projects (Mission) & Tasks (Strategy). I've found that starting with the broader Vision, Mission and Strategy framework makes identifying and creating the right Goals, Projects & Tasks significantly easier and more focused.

Examples:

  • Vision: "Create immersive sonic landscapes that help listeners process complex emotions and find moments of clarity in chaos."
  • Mission: "Build a dedicated community of 10,000 listeners by 2026 through consistent releases and intimate live experiences that bridge electronic experimentation with human vulnerability."
  • Strategy: "Release a 5-track EP in Q3 2025 exploring themes of digital disconnection, followed by a 6-city tour in Q4. Focus on building Spotify and TikTok presence through weekly content that documents my creative process. Collaborate with 2-3 complementary artists to expand audience reach."

Your vision is not fixed, it evolves with your understanding and ambitions. At first, you may optimize for attention. Later, you may optimize for financialisation.

To be clear, your vision is not a marketing copy for strangers. It's an internal compass for you and those who build with you. But clarity attracts alignment. When you articulate who you are, what you create, and where you're heading, you create a signal in the noise. The right people will self-select into your orbit. This will help you find your tribe.
