Data-Driven Performance Evolution

Every show generates valuable data that can inform your development as a performer and the growth of your music business. After each performance, It’s a good idea to have a quick debrief with the team. Much of this you will register by virtue of being on stage and talking with the audience and crew after the show . But it’s a good idea to ask everyone for their impressions and feedback after each show. 

Usually I will also ask the sound technician to record the ‘stereo out’ of the mixing desk so that I can listen back more objectively and make adjustments accordingly.

  1. Objective Metrics Assessment Document concrete performance indicators:
    • Attendance (compared to past shows in this market)
    • Merchandise sales (total and per-head)
    • Email signups or other list growth
    • Social engagement resulting from the show
    • New streaming listeners in the market following performance

  2. Qualitative Performance Review Assess the less tangible but equally important factors:
    • Audience energy and engagement throughout the set
    • Technical execution and sound quality
    • Stage presence and audience connection
    • Setlist effectiveness and flow
    • Any unexpected moments or issues

  3. Market Development Analysis Evaluate the strategic impact of the show:
    • Growth compared to previous performances in this market
    • New relationships formed (venues, local artists, industry)
    • Media coverage or attention generated
    • Potential for return performances and expected growth
    • Notes for improving next time in this market
