Chapter 2

Define Your Vibe and Values

Your music is an output of your specific knowledge, experiences and environment. Some artists intuit their core principles from the start based on these factors, but most discover them through the iterative process of success, failure, and aspiring toward those they admire. Either path works, but clarity is non-negotiable.

Your values aren't abstract concepts. They're your decision-making framework. They determine your lyrics, your collaborations, your audience. Write down your values early, even a draft is fine. Share them with your team so they can carry the vibe too.

Values aren’t cookie-cutter. A punk band’s “chaos and freedom” won’t vibe with a jazz artist’s “precision and soul.” What matters is authenticity. Your vibe attracts your audience. Make it true to you. Fans can smell inauthenticity a mile away. But avoid toxic vibes—too much exclusivity or ego won’t age well.
